Two high school students have been held in connection with attempted arson at a Migori school.
The Form Two Uriri High School students and three other suspects were arrested by detectives after teachers found them with a jerrican of petrol in the dormitories.
The fuel was believed to have been bought at Uriri trading centre.
"There was simmering students' unrest, prompting teachers to immediately launch investigations. The two boys were found keeping the inflammable liquid under their double deck bed," said the Migori District CID boss Abdi Salat.
The students, who are being held at Migori Police Station, have recorded statements.
Yesterday, the school was tense, as students threatened to riot, unless their colleagues were released.
Senior police officers visited the school, yesterday, to asses the situation.
District education officer Beatrice Adu could not be reached for comment. She was said to be in a day-long meeting.
In Kisii, the District Commissioner has blamed an upsurge of unrest in schools on lack of discipline.
Mr Abdilahi Leloon said parents had left the responsibility of bringing up their children to teachers. "They must wake up and reprimand their children for unbecoming behaviour," said the DC.
Mr Leloon and district education officer James Ochieng were reacting to a spate of riots in local schools. The latest was last week at Itibo Boys Secondary School, which was closed.
The officials said the district had received Sh16 million for bursaries, this year. They were at Moi Kisii Primary School in Nyaribari Chache, where Mr Leloon presented a Sh400,000 cheque from Kenya Charity Sweepstake.
